What the Holidays and Holy Communion have in Common
I don't know about you, but I love the Holidays. The time from the end of November to January 1 seem to have a sense of excitement and joy to them. It's also a great time to reflect on God's blessings and faithfulness. With that in mind, I want to point out a few things that the Holidays and Holy Communion have in common.
1. We Look Back With Thanksgiving
The Holiday season (In the United States) officially kicks off with a Holiday we call, "Thanksgiving." Thanksgiving is a time when we come together and reflect on the goodness and faithfulness of God. We gather with family, share a meal, and remember that God has blessed us in extraordinary ways.
Holy Communion begins by looking back with thanksgiving. Like the Holiday, we gather together with others and reflect on the goodness and faithfulness of God. We look back, thankful for Jesus' sacrifice that has given us new life.
Holy Communion should always begin by looking back with a thankful heart.
2. We Look Around With Joy
Christmas is, at its heart, a holiday of joy and cheer. It's a time to gather with family and celebrate. We give gifts to one another and celebrate family and friends.
Holy Communion is never just about you. In fact, when Paul writes the church at Corinth, he warns them against bringing a selfish attitude to the Lord's table. Communion is a joyous time. A celebration. A moment when believers should be reminded that they are not alone. Holy Communion says "There's always room at the Lord's table." This should bring us joy!
Holy Communion should always stir up a sense of Joy
3. We Look Forward With Hope
The Holiday season closes out with New Year's day. A time for resolutions, new commitments, a fresh start, and a new chance. The old year is gone, a new year has come. A new year full of new opportunity and hope.
Holy Communion reminds us that in Christ we can have a fresh start. Because of Jesus we have hope. It also reminds us that there is coming a day when Jesus will return and make all things right. One day we will sit with him at His Table, in Heaven, and enjoy His company forever.
Holy Communion should always inspire us to Hope
As you go through this Holiday season, may you take the time to Look back with Thanksgiving, Look Around with Joy, and Look Forward in Hope to all that God has for you.
We may not know what the future holds, but we serve a faithful God who Has been, currently is, and will continue to be good to us.
